Which software specialties offer solo work?

It seems like the vast majority of software development is done in
teams/groups. As an experienced developer who would rather work
alone, my question to other software developers is: Are there
specialties or subareas within software development where working
alone is relatively common?

Hi Mark,

As a matter of curiosity, why avoid teams. Some of the most satisfying
software development experiences I've had we while on while working on team
projects. You can learn from others and share what you know.

There is no software specialty that is anti-team.

However, you could decide on product niches where you could operate strictly
on your own. However, that means that you'll be doing software development
only part of the time. The rest of the time will be taken up with running
your business, marketing your products, deciding what the product stream
will be, etc. The product model that comes to mind is shareware or low-cost
utility programs.

If you're energized by the idea I'd recommend the book: The E-Myth. There
is another book of a similar only that is later and is a better one to get.

Good Luck.
